The Congolese government reiterated its willingness to continue its collaboration with the United Nations on the investigation on the violence in the provinces of Kasai and Kasai-central. The Congolese Minister of Rights, Marie-Ange Mushobekwa, said this at the opening of the 35th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

« The Congolese government agrees to host a team of United Nations investigators in support of the Congolese justice, » said the Minister of Human Rights, adding that « this support will be technical and / or logistic, and the Congolese justice will keep the leadership of these investigations ».

According to Marie-Ange Mushobekwa, following this joint investigation, the Congolese justice will prosecute the alleged perpetrators and will judge them according to the penal code in force in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The High Commissioner for Human Rights, on the other hand, wants an international investigation to shed light on the violence that has plunged the DRC into mourning, causing the death of more than 3,000 people as per the Catholic Church.

The vote on the need for an international investigation must take place on Thursday 22 June at the UN Human Rights Council.
